Glowing Skin Set: get glowing skin tips over the next three weeks from Salus Integrative Medicine. Great skin starts from the inside, out!
Aging skin is more than the result of time passing. Beyond the impacts of gravity, skin is alive and full of cells that need to stay healthy to maintain that youthful glow. It requires certain building materials our body pulls from the food we eat, as well as the removal of materials that slow down or harm healthy skin cell growth. One molecule with regenerative powers is Fisetin.
What is Fisetin?
Fisetin is “is a bioactive flavanol molecule found in fruits and vegetables such as strawberry, apple, persimmon, grape, onion, and cucumber at concentrations in the range of 2–160 μg/g (1).”
In more basic terms, Fisetin is a plant molecule that aids in regenerating the plant’s cells. Fisetin enables regenerative processes in humans as well; potentially blocking oxidation in the body, enabling a better turnover of healthy cells and healthier cell life going forward. These functions are pivotal in promoting healthy skin cells and regeneration, reducing the look of aging.
Our skin must shed the dead cells and grow healthy, new ones. Without this process, our skin would struggle to cool us down in the Summer heat, prevent bacteria and viruses from attacking the body, and feel the world around us. It is not a passive art piece to look at, but an integral part of your overall health and wellbeing.
Fisetin breaks down the enzyme that increases the growth of harmful cells, allowing the body time to remove these cells before they become a larger problem. It has also been shown to break down part of the harmful cells themselves, while leaving healthy cells unharmed. It can support these healthy cells through the breakdown of harmful compounds before they interact with the cell. This means Fisetin slows down the growth of harmful cell groups, helps remove the harmful cells, and breaks down the molecules that could prevent healthy cell growth.
Internally, Fisetin may improve organ functions and memory retention by supporting brain cell structures. An apple a day does keep the doctor away!
High-Fisetin Foods:
The foods with the highest concentration of Fisetin include Strawberries, Apples, and Persimmons. These foods provide high amounts of Fisetin, as well as fiber and many nutrients that support overall health. The downside? There isn’t one unless you’re allergic to these certain foods or don’t round out your diet with other necessary nutrients. Foods high in Fisetin are generally safe and encouraged as part of a healthy diet.
Try to incorporate these foods in your regular diet:
- Strawberries
- Apples
- Persimmon
- Onions
- Kale
- Kiwi
- Grapes
- Cucumbers
